Kate Maxwell

Kate Maxwell, Spiritual DirectorKate Maxwell: “I am a contemplative and an Episcopal Benedictine Sister (yes, there are such things!) and have been a member of St John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Minneapolis for more than 25 years. I believe that walking alongside people in their spiritual lives is an immense privilege and grace.

Spiritual direction is a relationship of trust. It is very important that each of you find a director who is the right ‘fit’ for you. Therefore, I offer first conversations on the possibility of direction free of charge. I also believe that direction should be within everyone’s reach, so I work on a sliding scale basis.

Over the years, I have done spiritual direction with folks who are just starting out on their conscious spiritual paths as well as with individuals who have been in spiritual direction for a long time. I enjoy doing both individual and group spiritual direction. Groups may be as small as four or as large as six.

I also enjoy leading retreats and workshops in congregations and retreat centers on topics in spirituality, such as Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, Praying from Where You Are, and Prayer for People Too Busy to Pray.

For the past seven years, I have worked with the non-profit group City House, doing spiritual direction and spirituality groups for women in a domestic abuse shelter, and women and men in a drop-in center for folks who suffer from serious and persistent mental illness. This is a deeply moving part of my life, where I continue to deepen and grow. In addition, I have been a mentor in the Education for Ministry program for 20 years.

I hold a master’s degree from the Theology School of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX. I did DMin work at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where I taught courses in the area of spirituality and did spiritual direction and directed retreats with divinity students. I was part of the ministry team at the Cenacle Retreat House in the early 80’s.

I have been in continuous spiritual direction myself for longer than I’ve been a director, and I continue in peer supervision. My professional insurance is through Darwin National Insurance Company, and I hold current certification in Safe Church from the Episcopal Church in Minnesota.

You can reach me at 651 263-3840 or katemaxwell1109@gmail.com. I can meet with you at St. John’s, Minneapolis, or some other convenient place.”
